It was dramatic to watch my grandmother decapitate a turkey with an ax the

ax work would probably qualify all turkeys so honored with gourmet status.

| History of Thanksgiving
|
The
first Thanksgiving occurred when Captain John Woodlief led the newly arrived
English colonists to a grassy slope along the James River and instructed them
to drop to their knees and pray in thanks for a safe arrival to the New World.
On this day, Dec. 4, 1619, these 38 men from Berkeley Parish in England were
given the instructions:
"Wee ordaine that the day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned
for plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually keept
holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God."
This saying is now carved on a brick gazebo, where it is believed that
Woodlief knelt down beside the James River. The
First Thanksgiving was Celebrated in Virginia
The early settlers of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts were particularly
thankful for Squanto, the Native American who taught them how to catch eel,
grow corn and who served as an interpreter for them (Squanto had learned
English as a slave in Europe). Without Squanto's help the settlers might not
have survived in the new world.
These settlers (who later came to be called the "Pilgrims") set
apart a day to celebrate at Plymouth immediately after their first harvest, in
1621.
After their first harvest, the colonists of the Plymouth held a celebration
of food, feasting, and praising God in the fall of 1621. Indian chiefs
Massassoit, Squanto and Samoset joined in the celebration with ninety of their
men in the three-day event.

Having family like you means so much
Because of how wonderful you are
You have made the times we have shared such good times
And have given me such sweet memories to cherish always
There is a special closeness that we share
And a warmth when we are together
That comes from knowing that we are family
And that we will always be there for each other
Thank you for all of the love and care and special times
I am so very thankful that you are my family
With Much Love
Happy Thanksgiving
